Hermann Goering - No.2 Nazi
Herman Goering was an Aryan German who became Hitler's 'designated successor.' The Nazi Party won 12 Reichstag (meeting place of the 'federal assembly') seats of which Hermann occupied one. He joined the Nazi Party in late 1922 and married a Swedish Baronness who divorced her husband at the time soon after meeting Herman. Goering was a father to one child which he had with his second wife. As head of the a recently developed German airforce (Luftwaffe) it was clear he was serious about Nazism as this airforce was cleverly hidden as a civilian initiative until March 1935. It later became clear what the purpose of this airforce was for.
What personal problems did Goering face?Goering faced an immense addiction with a drug similar to morphine known as Paracoideine which completely poisoned his system and drug treatment was extremely necessary. The drug made Goering quite a flamboyant character messing with his sense of the norm. He enjoyed wearing quite colourful clothes and delved in luxuries that were taken from the Jews.
The Capture of Hermann GoeringAfter the surrender of Germany (due to Hitler's suicide) Hermann Goering was found guilty of war crimes and had become a war criminal. Captain Harold L Bond was one of the men in the US team ordered to capture Hermann. In an article written by Captain Harold he states, 'There was no sympathy wasted on Goering.' He had 'taken the No.2 Nazi alive, and we were glad he was alive, but not out of compassion.' Everyone involved wanted Hermann to suffer under the law for the horrendous crimes he had committed and ordered.

"Naturally, the common people don't want war, but after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag people along whether it is a ddemocracy, or a facist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country." |
How did Goering die?
Hermann died in what some would call a 'cowardly death.' He denied all claims of being involved in the planning of the mass murders and executions however as he was such a major figure in the rise of Hitler, he could not escape the death sentence. Goering pleaded to be shot instead of hung (most likely to avoid the prolonged pain and of course, the embarrassment of being hung in public.) He was denied his wish and was sentenced to death by hanging. One the night of which his execution was ordered Hermann injested poison and died in his jail cell in 1946. It was only in 1967 when a note was found stating that he had hidden the poison capsule in a 'container of Pomade.'

Nuremberg Trials were held in Nuremberg (as seen above)
What made Hermann join the Nazi Party in the first place? On November 1922, Herman Goering first met Hitler at Nazi rally. It remains unknown what exactly led Goering to join Hitler however due to numerous reports showing Hermann's greed, it can be assumed that Hermann joined the party because he was greedy for power and recognition. He convinced Hitler that he would make the best possible permanent President. By May 5, 1993, Hermann had been assigned Head Minister of Aviation.

How did Hermann gain Hitler's trust?Goering was deeply involved in the Beer Hall Putsch which was a failed attempt to gain full control of the German government. During this attempt Hermann was critically injured in the groin. It was only then when he was introduced to the drug morphine - this was the beginning of his morphine addiction. Goering was exiled up until 1927 when he was 'granted amnesty' (exemption from punishment), he then rejoined the Nazi Party. By doing this it became evident that Hermann Goering was a loyal supporter and brave leader which was exactly what Hitler needed.
